Overview

Our curriculum is underpinned by our Chrisitan Values.

Principles Underpinning the Curriculum

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum that is designed on a 2 year rolling programme for our EYFS and KS1 children and a mixture of a 4 year and 2 year rolling programme for KS2.  This allows for our mixed age classes and ensures that children have firm foundations in all subject areas.  The curriculum design identifies key knowledge for each subject and is taught through key Big Ideas.  Using the Big Ideas ensures that children are able to draw comparisons from different topics and understand links from each area.

Our Big Ideas for all subjects

The Core Subjects are:

Maths, English and Science

These subjects are often standalone subjects that teach the skills used in other subject areas and that are vital for children's development.  We also offer a termly Maths at the Movies Day where children work on applying their maths skills to problems posed from Children's Films.   For English we have a whole school writing day termly  with a whole school joint input.  These have varied from finding Dragons eggs in the school wild garden, to pirate days to Alice in Wonderland focused days.
These days give our children opportunities to develop their writing or Maths skills in new contexts.

The Half Termly Discrete Subjects are:

History and Geography

These subjects offer opportunities for children to develop their understanding of the world and how we have become the society we are today.  They allow for opportunities to showcase the skills developed in the core subjects and their Big Ideas ensure cohesion through topics.

Art, Design and Technology and Outdoor Learning Opportunities

These subjects sometimes provide an opportunity to develop the children's wider experience of a subject topic through bringing concepts to life.  However, it is also vital that knowledge and skills progression is clear for each subject so sometimes these are taught as stand alone units. Again these have Big Ideas running through them to support the children in developing concepts by revisiting ideas.

The Continuous Discrete Subjects are:

PE, Music, RE,  Computing, Modern Foreign Language (French), PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education)

These subjects are taught separately and have designated times in the week to be taught.  Currently Music, PE and French all have specialist teachers teaching these areas plus extra support from classroom teachers to consolidate ideas.

Educational Visits

Taking children on trips adds an extra dynamic to learning in a social as well as academic sense. Trips for different age ranges includes: museum visits, the zoo, the seaside, the cathedral as well as using the village as a resource for local study.

Outdoor Learning

We consider opportunities to learn outside as an essential element of the curriculum. We have dedicated outdoor areas for all classes and are in the process of enhancing them further. In addition to the school areas we have constant access to Rowley Wood, which is a 5 minute walk through the fields. We offer each class an afternoon of outdoor learning once a fortnight .  These sessions have a half termly identified curriculum focus for example PSHE, Science or Geography. Our curriculum cycles reflect this and identified outdoor learning focused topics can be seen in the curriculum overviews (coming soon).
